The houses of the future are transformable

Did you know that in Switzerland we have been "building up" around 1 m2 of floor space per second since 1950? And that every second detached house is "only" occupied by one or two people? Today, with Casafair, we are showing how densification can work not only in cities, but also in neighbourhoods with single-family homes. After all, land is a valuable and scarce resource that should remain partly undeveloped - for the sake of agriculture, intact biodiversity and our health.

MetamorpHouse | The dream of owning a home is usually realised with a family with children in mind. But needs change over time. It is not easy to imagine how a detached house can be extended by one or two flats. But it is worth developing this idea, because an additional flat has many advantages. For example: If the house or garden becomes too large in view of old age If the financial burden of the property needs to be reduced If you want to offer a family member or stranger a good flat to rent. Mariette Beyeler and Lucas Jaunin founded MetamorpHouse ten years ago to raise awareness for the gentle redensification of single-family home neighbourhoods, to increase and diversify the supply of flats and thus create living space for different household sizes, types and generations. The aim is to stimulate a socially, ecologically and economically resilient transformation of low-density housing estates. The initiative is supported by the Casafair association, various cantons, the F ...

Casafair provides advice and support According to the 10 vor 10 report (see article on the right), there are over 1 million single-family homes in Switzerland, many of which have a densification potential of over 100% under the new building regulations. In Frauenfeld, for example, flats for 10,000 additional people could be built in this way. Casafair offers advice on legal, architectural and energy-related issues.

RAUMPIONIERE - the new tool for internal densification The new tool, which is described in the 10vor10 article (right), allows a simple and reliable initial indication for all plots of land in Switzerland. Thanks to comprehensive building regulations data, landowners can visualise the utilisation reserves of their plot.

Speaking of sustainable living ... | We were able to present two further commitments to sustainable living from Casafair in the 2020 Advent calendar when we talked about low-car living and fairness and transparency in the rental structure.
